I feel so sad over the tragic loss of Whitney Houston. I am able to throw away all thoughts of her and her troubled years and go back to the days when she was a celebrated icon with a voice of gold.
I was in high school when the world was first introduced to Whitney. My friends and I just loved her. I remember that we couldn't wait to get her cassette tape. (Yeah, I said cassette tape. We had big boom boxes back then. lol)
I remember playing that thing over & over again. She was beautiful, she made great videos, she had a cool style, but most importantly she had that voice, that incredible voice.
I always loved the song, "The Greatest Love of All." This song was played at our high school graduation in 1986.
It's really upsetting when the singers you enjoyed, the ones you grew up listening to, the ones you hear singing in the background as your high school memories play before you (like in your high school graduation), are just one day gone...and gone all too soon. (Michael Jackson, anyone?)
Rest in Peace, Whitney. God's Choir of Angels just received a new voice and what a voice it is!

I am so glad you posted about this tragedy. I have been sad all day! What a talented performer, and I love the song, "How Will I Know."
ReplyDeleteOMG I was just sick when I heard I gasped!! I wonder how different her life would have been had she not got involved with Bobby Brown! Body guard....the movie and the music...That is what I will remember...God rest her soul!
ReplyDeleteCarol
I heard this sad news this morning! She had so much talent! Also loved the song, The Greatest Love of All!
ReplyDeleteWhat a voice! I am truly sad that she is gone too soon. I was hoping she would pull her life back together! I will never forget that voice! I am watching the Grammy's and they just showed her singing "The Greatest Love of All" again...what a voice. RIP Whitney!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely couldn't believe the news of her passing!! At first I thought someone was playing a joke. I automatically thought back to "You Give Good Love"...probably my all time favorite Whitney song. In truth, though, all her songs are awesome. :) I first heard her in 6th grade (I think??!) and our principal used the lyrics from "The Greatest Love of All" as her speech at our graduation. I feel so awful for Whitney's family...especially her daughter! Poor thing. Such a sad day...same as when Michael passed. (LOVE him!)
ReplyDeleteClass of 86 here too Gina!!! My friend Ginger and I knew every word to every song on her first album. She was so poised when she sang! I'll always have memories of her singing "I'm Every Woman" dancing around with her cute little baby bump. I'm sad that she's gone:(
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame Gina, so many are taken away so young, I feel the same about Bobby Brown wondering if her life would have been different if she had never been with him. "You Give Good Love" was my favorite, feel so bad for her daughter!
ReplyDeleteGina, I know! I have been repeating "I can't believe that Whitney died" all day today. It's very sad, I loved her voice!
ReplyDeleteDebbie
So glad you posted this....I am soooo sad at her passing...I've loved her forever!!! Such elegance, powerful voice, funny and sunny too, a true Diva, the best. Love all her songs, esp. I want to dance with somebody.....God grant her peace and rest, I know he has dried all her tears.....
ReplyDeleteAnd, just a little footnote....I am the class of '64....never stopped lovin the music and never stopped dancin....
ReplyDeleteMe too! How very sad and such a loss. Everytime she comes to mind I hear her singing I will always love you and it is so sad. Cheers SpecialK XoXo
ReplyDeleteGodspeed Whitney. That was my 8th grade grad song.
ReplyDeleteGina, I am only slightly behind you in age so I too feel very badly about her tragic life and death. She certainly was a talent like no other. I used to listen to her music every day. Will people never learn that drugs are so destructive? I hope so. Have a great Monday!------ Shannon
ReplyDeleteWhat a sad end for such a gifted woman. We will miss her Heavenly voice.
ReplyDeleteMy heart is so sad to have lost such an amazing and talented voice.
ReplyDeleteWhitney Houston was one of my first cassette tapes too.
This is a beautiful post, Gina. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Of course, I'm older but I do remember the cassette tapes ~ in fact, I still have a few. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think we must overlook whatever demons plagued this beautiful person, inside and out. No one knows what really went on but she was still nervous about performing. Isn't that something? Everyone would LOVE to be in her presence ~ and there's no voice like hers. Yes, she's definitely singing with the angels now. RIP beautiful lady!
Pat
Nice post! thanks for sharing Joann
ReplyDeleteThis is so very sad. My heart breaks for her family, especially her daughter.
ReplyDeleteHi Gina,
ReplyDeleteI could not believe it when I heard about it. It's so sad. Whitney will be missed. :-(
