Me & My Big Ideas

Sometimes I get big ideas...

G R E A T   B I G   I D E A S.

Most of the time, these ideas get me in trouble.
This time is no exception.

Me:
Wouldn't it be great if we could remove that old, ugly tile in front of
the fireplace and put new tile in?

He:
Yeah, I bet we can do it ourselves.

Me:
When?  When can we do it? When?
(Everyday for several days.)

He:
You better come here.  It's not breaking up well with the sledgehammer.
Wait until you see how thick the tile is!
There's also inches of concrete beneath it!

Me:
Oh no, they had some crazy thick tile in 1933!
Now what?

He:
I've got an idea!  I'll be right back.

Me:
I can't believe you used that jackhammer in my living room!

He:
I don't know if we're going to be able to pull this one off.

Me:
Great.

Excuse me, while I go off and cry in a corner somewhere.
Stay tuned for me & my big ideas!

  17. That's how ALL my projects go. It's always something! Have to buy a new tool or what I was expecting to do can't be done. SO frustrating!!!

Your's doesn't look so bad once your husband took the jackhammer to it! I'll bet it'll turn out fine!

  20. This sounds EXACTLY like me and Mr. A. We always thinks that we are capable of way more than we actually are.

  32. O, I think the jack hammer was an EXCELLENT idea...got it all out. Now, the fun part...cleaning it up, leveling it for the new tile and once that is done, laying the tile is not hard. We've done it several times...it's just the getting ready for it that takes awhile.
    It's gonna be sooo pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You'll have to build it back up with concrete, leave room for thin set, and whatever tile you decide on. It'll be okay!! PROMISE :)

  34. LOL Gina, I am laughing with you, not at you. You have brought back some great memories! My husband and I have found ourselves in this kind of situation so many times! This is the life of a "DIY couple". Always getting ourselves in trouble! LOL I know you guys will figure it out and get it all finished and beautiful. Can't wait to see the new tile or brick on your gorgeous fireplace. It will be worth all the mess and hard work!

  35. ARGH!!! That is exactly the kind of thing that happens to me... and my big old ideas.

I have confidence in you, though. I just know you are going to create something just beautiful.

  37. Oh my dear, big ideas & small ones make things look fabulous, don't worry, it will come together nicely. Perhaps a layer of cement first, dry then lay the new tile.
Glad that I found your lovely blog.

  38. Oh my gosh! That tile could have survived the apocalypse! I really do think our husbands were separated at birth...any reason is a good reason to rent a power tool, right?

Good luck, you'll make it work!

  43. Gina, I can't wait to see how this turns out. This reminds me of the house we used to live in...built like a fort! They don't make them like that anymore. Our house even had cement block interior WALLS! It makes every project more challenging and more rewarding.
