Bang, Bam, Crash!!

The day we have been dreading has finally arrived--the roofers are here as I type, putting on our new roof. There was an air of sickness here this morning as John & I watched the roofers drive up. We stood in the kitchen with very emotional looks on our faces, knowing that it was the end of an era. You see our house is old & loaded with charm. One of the greatest parts of the house is the slate roof. It lends so much character to the house and is often referred to rather lovingly by passerbys as "the beautiful house on the corner with the slate roof" and "how I've always admired your house with that slate roof".(no kidding) Well, as the house is 73 years old, the original slate roof has unfortunately come to the end of its life. We have some leaks in a few of the rooms and after getting several professional opinions, there was no way to salvage it...it has to come off. It's an expensive endeavor and one that we are not feeling wholeheartedly, but is necessary just the same. So as I sit here, listening to the banging & hearing the slates crash to the ground, with my heart broken, I decided to document this moment so that I could pay tribute to the "beautiful house on the corner with the slate roof".

  3. GIRL! you have to save some of it! repurpose it somehow... can you use it in the garden? make stepping stones out of some of it? your home is GORGEOUS! and i just watched curb appeal and they did a roof replacement, same situation, with a faux slate roof... 1/3 of the cost and looked "almost" identical! good luck and take TONS of motrin BEFORE the headache sets in!
