Winter Doldrums

I've got a bad case of the Winter doldrums.

It's so cold,
we never made it out of the negative digits today.
It's -2°,
factoring in the wind chill,
it's -26°.

I swear if I didn't have to go to work,
I wouldn't want to leave the house at all.
I'm beginning to feel like a bear in hibernation this Winter.

When we are lucky enough to get up to a balmy 20° or so,
(yes, 20° feels balmy around here now)
it ends up snowing at least 8-12 inches.
If we don't have snow,
then we have to deal with sub zero temperatures.
We can't win.

I just pray that this Winter ends soon.
It's so discouraging.

Anyway,  hubby & I have been working on a project &
I can't wait to show you what we've been up to!
It will be a bit yet before I can share it;
there's still so much to do.

I hope the weather is much better where you are.
If not, stay warm & hopefully Spring will make
an appearance real soon!
Here's to hoping anyway....

Snow Day Tablescape

I thought I'd share a tablescape with you today.

Welcome to the Snow Day...

I started with a snowflake tablecloth from Kohls.

The snowman salad plates are from QVC.
They are by Rachael Ray
and just perfect for this time of year.

I added my everyday white Corelle dinner plates
and some white chargers.
The chargers are from the Oneida Ltd. outlet.
(I miss that store.)

My gingham flatware is from Spiegel, many moons ago.
(Do you remember Spiegel?  I used to devour that catalog
and want to buy everything in it!)

I bought the snowman napkin rings on Ebay a few years back.

A couple of snowmen friends
from my large collection were added as a centerpiece,
followed by my mercury glass votive candle holders.

And that is that...sweet & simple!

Stay warm dear friends!

Paper Snowflake Tutorial

When I posted my Winter mantel a few days ago, several of you requested a tutorial of how to make the paper snowflakes that I used in my banner.   I'm no tutorial expert, but I'll give it a try.

Do you remember making paper snowflakes that looked like this when you were a kid?  (From notebook paper no less!)

I remember seeing pretty snowflakes, ones that were round or star-shaped, but could never figure out how to make them.  Remember we didn't have the internet back then!

Just before Christmas, one of my students gave me a snowflake that looked like the one above.  Grateful though I was, it stirred up my old childhood wish to make pretty snowflakes.

Needless to say, I finally learned how to make them (some 30 years later) and once I got started, I couldn't stop!

Ok, tutorial time, get ready for lots of pictures.  It's very dark here, so I apologize for the quality.

Step 1.  You need to start out with a square piece of paper.  I made all sizes, but this one is 8" x 8".

Step 2.  Fold this square into a triangle.

Step 3.  Fold the triangle over again into another smaller triangle.

Step 4.  Make sure the point of the triangle faces down, like so.

Things might get a little tricky for the next few steps, but hopefully the pictures will help you.

Step 5.  Take one side of the triangle and fold it over one-third of the way.

Step 6.  Take the other side of the triangle and fold it over again.

Step 7.  Turn the piece over to the back side and cut off the pointed ends.

Step 8.  Now take your shape and just start cutting rounded shapes, triangles, deep V's, whatever you like.  Just be careful not to cut away all the edges.

This is what mine looked like when I was done cutting.

Step 9.  Gently open your shape and see your pretty snowflake creation!  This is the fun part because you never know what you're going to get.

You can make all different sizes and styles just by altering all the little cuts you make.  Like they say, no two snowflakes are alike.

Have fun and see you soon!

Dreaming of Snow, Pinterest Style

I know there has got to be something wrong with me.

I'm dreaming of snow. Beautiful, fluffy, white snow.

Since we haven't received one single snowflake here as of yet, I decided to get my fill via Pinterest.

*Sigh* Snow can be so perfectly dreamy.

(In April, when it's still snowing here and I start incessantly complaining about the neverending snow, and you show me pictures of your beautiful Spring blooms, feel free to go right ahead and remind me of this post, ok?)

White Fever

Every year around this time, I get White Fever.

White Fever is not a good fever. (Certainly not like Beiber Fever.)
It's a fever from seeing too much white & too much white is never a good thing, especially for those of us who are lovers of color.

Each year I search for a cure, but there isn't one available. However, I find that I can ease my symptoms a bit.

See, like an icy cold popsicle when you have a 103 degree fever...this soothes!

Aah yes, I think I'm feeling better already.

A Snowy Day

And finally Winter, with its bitin', whinin' wind,
and all the land will be mantled with snow.

--Roy Bean

We are enjoying a snow day today. The kids & I are thrilled. We have already baked chocolate chip cookies...

and will curl up on the couch with a movie soon. My son & I are still in our pajamas @ 1:30 in the afternoon! It doesn't get any better than this. I love a good snow day. There is nothing like being cozy & warm in my home while nature does its thing.

Everytime we have a snow day, I am reminded of this old scrapbook layout from 2003. One of my favorite snow pictures of my husband & son in the quiet of winter.

Yes, I was once an avid scrapbooker. Not so much anymore though.

Whether you are experiencing a snow day, just a little snow or even if it's bright & sunny day where you are, I hope it's a good one!

Snow

Looking out my windows this morning, I see this:

and this:

17 inches of snow yesterday, combined with what we already had created this winter wonderland we're experiencing now. The best part?

SNOW DAY! No school for kids = No work for me! Yippee!

Now, don't let my joy of no work fool you. I honestly would rather have signs of spring and a day at work, than 2 feet of snow and no work, especially this late in February. You see, I love snow, but when the end of February rolls around I'm kind of done with it. At this time of year, we've already put in our time, about 4 months of snow, and we will most likely still have 2 more to go as it often snows into April. (There have even been a few instances when it's snowed in May, but we try hard to forget about that!)
I really shouldn't complain though. At least Central New Yorkers are able to handle this kind of thing, we're equipped for it. Give us a couple of hours to dig out and it's life as usual. Nothing like what our friends to the south have experienced in the last month...those poor people were incapacitated by the snow!
Whether you're at the mercy of a snowstorm or seeing budding signs of spring, I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Oh the weather outside is frightful!

Yes, we are getting hit with a snowstorm. I can hear the wind howling and the see the snow blowing all around. I don't mind, I love the snow, especially at this time of year. The best part of today though? Snowday!! The schools are closed which means the kids are home and there's no work for me. As if that wasn't fun enough, my husband is off from work today as well. I can see a great day filled with hot cocoa, warm cookies, board games and Christmas movies. Ahhhh, what a wonderful day! I also would like to wrap some gifts and then...I hate to say it...clean the bathrooms. I know, I know, cleaning the bathrooms does not fit into this pretty little picture I've painted, but nonetheless, it needs to be done.
I thought I would leave you with a photo or two of some holiday happiness at home.
I love this Santa on the Moon. My mom & dad bought it for me several years ago.
Blue decorations are new for me this year. With my new furniture, I refused to go with the traditional red & green in this room. I'll share more photos later. Have a great (& toasty warm) day!
