Chalkboard Plant Sticks (in the Spotlight)

Another week gone by,

only 7 days of school left,

and time for the Newbie Spotlight of the Week!

Debbiedoo's Newbie Party can be found here.

This week the spotlight shines on:

Angela made these cute chalkboard plant sticks
 from a craft (popsicle) stick!

I love how simple they are and especially how fantastic they look.
Such a smart idea.

Take a look at Angela's fab living room, too.

Awesome, isn't it?

Looks like another talented Newbie is on the block!

Go ahead and explore

(While you're there,
take a look at her Mom's amazing Americana house tour.)

Angela, here is a Spotlight button for your sidebar.

Painted Stairs (The Reveal)

Do you remember some months back when I said we were thinking of ripping the rug off the stairs?

Well, we did it and it's finally painted and ready for the big reveal.

Warning:  lots of photos ahead!

You can find out the whole ugly rug story by looking at this post, but if you need a reminder, here's what the rug looked like when we bought the house:

I know you are all slapping your foreheads saying, "Oh yeah, I remember now, how could anyone forget that atrocity?"

After a few years living in the house, we had this berber installed:

After almost 8 years, it started to look worn & dirty...so in March 2012, my husband happily ripped that rug of the stairs.

This is what we found under the rug:

Not too pretty, that's for sure!  Hmmm...here's a closer shot so you can get the full horror effect:

Oh yes, my friends, we always get more than we bargained for in this house!

Having no clue what we were going to do, I started working on the stairs with a heat gun, trying to remove all the paint.  (That is after a good cleaning & my husband removing all 132,648 staples.)

My sister-in-law walked in one day while I was heat gunning.  Needless to say, she made me come to my senses (something my husband had been trying to do).  Aside from the fact that she convinced me that I would likely still be removing the paint 48 years from now, she also brought up the fact of the old house & loving all of its imperfections for what they are.

So after some thought, and with the arrival of April, it was time to prime the stairs, imperfections and all.

It took another month for me to decide on a paint color.  Lots of back & forth on that one.  I really did not want black treads, although I knew that was the most practical solution.  I wanted to paint the treads the wall color (Ralph Lauren Nantucket White) but I knew that it was too light for walking on.  So on a whim, I chose Sherwin Williams Baguette, a golden brown color with white semi-gloss for the risers.

It seemed as though the painting took forever, having to do every other step so that we could still use the stairway, not to mention all those baseball & softball games in between.  However, when it was finally done, I could breathe a sigh of relief!

It did require some touching up and caulking after this photo was taken, but still I knew it needed something else.  I know that painting numbers on the risers is popular, but I wanted something different.  My husband kept telling me to just leave them alone, but I don't always listen. No surprise on that one.

I found some pretty vinyl decals in a vine pattern from Abby's Vinyl Wall Art on Etsy.  With little effort in applying them, they added just that something else that I was looking for.

So now in June, they are finally finished and ready to make their debut:

The whole process took alot longer than I expected, but I'm so pleased with the results!

From ugly to pretty......

They are so much easier to keep clean too.  No more lugging the vacuum up & down the stairs.

So much better now...I really do love them!

Happy Monday everyone...it is so hot & humid here today, I feel like a wilted flower.

Family Wedding Cakes through the Years

Today, I am joining Stephanie at Angelic Accents for her
To Have and To Hold Wedding Party.

Last year, I shared my magical wedding gown for Stephanie's party.

This year, I've moved on to wedding cakes.
I thought it would be fun to share some of the wedding cakes
of my family members.

This is my parent's wedding cake, 1955.

My mom said is was very hot and humid that day
and the cake was practically melting.

This next picture I just had to include, also from my parent's wedding album.
Heaven forbid you have an Italian wedding without a cookie tray....

....and I mean a cookie tray that requires two people to carry!  lol

My oldest sister got married in 1980.
She had a waterfall cake and instead of the traditional bride & groom,
she had Annalee wedding mice atop the cake.

My second oldest sister got married in 1983 .  Her cake had a bridge.

When my sister brought her wedding album over to me,
she remarked about how ugly everything was,
especially the paneling & air vent over their heads
in this picture!  lol

What's even funnier is that when I opened my
oldest sister's wedding album and found the picture of her wedding cake,
I found the same paneling & air vent! lol
(It's true, go back up & look.)

I don't have a picture of my brother's wedding cake from 1987.
My sister-in-law is so non-sentimental, I was afraid to call
and ask for a photo of her wedding cake
for fear she'd say she's thrown away the wedding album years ago!
Yeah, I am serious.

My wedding cake, 1992, was a strawberry cheescake.

In 1992, I was not a fan of cheesecake, but it was the only request
my husband made, so how could I refuse him?
When he fed me that cake, I made the most horrible face
and I do believe I said, "I hate cheesecake" on the video.
I am proud to say, I now love cheesecake!

As a side note...believe it or not, the picture of my wedding cake was
taken in the same location as my two sisters' wedding cakes.
Thank goodness the reception hall remodeled by then!  lol

My niece is getting married in October 2012.
Her cake will most likely look something like this:

Wedding cakes sure have come a long way since 1955,
 haven't they?

If you enjoyed this post today
and would like to see more posts of wedded bliss,
head on over to Stephanie's blog, Angelic Accents
This party really is alot of fun to participate in.

Thanks for joining me today!

Nautical Wall Gallery (in the Spotlight)

Another new week, another Newbie Spotlight
found at Debbiedoo's Newbie Party!

This week, the Newbie Spotlight of the Week goes to:

Katie shared this fantastic nautical gallery wall in her son's room.
Being that I am crazy for all things nautical (always have been),
I just couldn't resist sharing this with you.

Tell me that isn't just the sweetest gallery wall ever?
I love the colors, I love the textures and of course, those
adorable photos!

Most of the items used here did not originally look
like this.  Katie has a talent for reinventing things to fit her own style and
tastes.   Got to love a girl who can take something
and make it her own!

Go on over & take a look at something to be found,

and after that,

go on over & take a look at the other Newbie Spotlights of the Week at:

Katie, congratulations to you!   Here is a button for you to display.

Happy Wednesday!  We're halfway to another weekend!

Summer Mantel 2012

It may not officially be Summer just yet, but I'm all about wishful thinking.
Be gone rain & 60 degrees, I'm done with you!

As a result, I decided it was high time to give the mantel
a little refresh for the season.

I didn't really buy a whole lot to complete my mantelscape this year.
I did purchase the paper curly-q flowers from Hobby Lobby.
Aren't they fun?
I loved them so much, I wanted to buy every color they were selling,
but I managed to restrain myself to the two colors.

The little blue vases are new, from Joann Fabrics.
Everything else I already owned.

Oh wait.  I forgot!  I did buy that blue stool from Kirklands.

Some pretty blue & green fabric sewn together to make a banner.
Yes, I did say "sewn."
I began sewing a few flags by hand and then my Mom stopped by and
insisted on taking the rest home with her to sew on her machine.
Thanks Mom!
I added a little rick rack for a touch of whimsy.

This part of my living room is all set for Summer now.
Have you given your mantel the Summer treatment yet?

Debbiedoo's Copycat Challenge, Patriotic Style

It's time for another Copycat Magazine Challenge hosted by Debbiedoos!

I took my inspiration from Romantic Homes magazine, June 2012.

No, I did not copy that gorgeous room on the cover!
Isn't that incredible though?

I chose something quite a bit simpler.

I really liked the votive holders embellished with vintage brooches
on the top of this page.

However, as much as I love those vintage brooches,
I decided to give mine a little patriotic style.

After all, we have the 4th of July coming up,
not to mention cheering for the
red, white & blue
in the upcoming Olympics.
(I love watching the Olympics!)

I knew just who to call to pull off this patriotic look too.
One call to Mom brought her to my door, within 15 minutes,
bearing a box of patritotic pins in assorted styles.
That woman has everything and is beyond awesome!

I hope you enjoyed my copycat, patriotic style!

I feel as though I've started every post within the last month
telling you how busy I am.
